2024 Specialized Roubaix SL8 Comp

The new Roubaix SL8 with Future Shock 3.0 is lighter, faster, and smoother than any road bike ever made, unleashing unmatched confidence. The road may be hell below, but on Roubaix, it’s always heaven above.

  • COMPLIANCE: Future Shock 3.0 is the star of the show, more tunable, adjustable, and durable than ever. Now, regardless of position on the bike, every rider experiences 20mm of smooth, stiction-free travel between the stem and head tube. Future Shock helps keep your hands and bars steady for a smoother ride with more control to stay fast, safe, and confident.

  • Our dropped clamp design exposes more seatpost to increase deflection, but “more” isn’t simply better. The Pavé seatpost controls that deflection for the optimal vertical compliance. Together they create AfterShock technology, and when paired with the Roubaix’s rigid rear triangle, deliver a smooth ride with no loss in efficiency.

  • The Roubaix SL8 is the smoothest road bike our Ride Science Team has ever tested—reducing impacts at the bars and saddle by 53% vs. the nearest competition. With Roubaix’s Future Shock 3.0 the wheel quickly moves over the bump, while rider mass remains stable, maintaining momentum in rough terrain. Typical forks deflect backward on impact, causing a measurable loss in speed. It’s a scientific fact, smoother is indeed faster.

  • CAPABILITY: The Roubaix pioneered endurance geometry, so you ride “IN” the bike, not “ON” the bike to relieve pressure on your hands, arms, and shoulders for capability and confidence on any road, yet it’s ready to dissect a mountain decent at full gas. Snuggle up.

  • With tire clearance up to 38c/40mm, this endurance road machine delivers better traction than ever on rough roads and even light gravel. Thanks to lightweight, super-efficient Specialized tires, that extra tire volume and traction comes with no downsides.

  • Roubaix inspires really BIG days on the bike, so we’ve given it every mount your adventures could need—three bottle mounts, top-tube mounts, and it’s even fender-ready. So, go ahead and bring it all along for the ride.

  • PERFORMANCE: The new Roubaix SL8 is our most aero yet, with new aero shapes from our Free Foil library and dropped seat stays. At just 950 grams, the frame is lighter, utilizing lessons learned from the Aethos - the world’s lightest production frame - and Fact 10r carbon blend. Nothing in its class is faster or lighter than the Roubaix.

SCOTT Spark RC Team Issue AXS

#sparklewatts or #SPARKlewatts? The new SCOTT Spark is sure to put a glittering smile on your face as you cruise through the forest.

Yep. I just did that. But how can I not - we’re talking about SPARKLES.

All kidding aside, this bike is impressive and we are very excited to finally have one in the shop!

The Spark has historically been one of the fastest and most-winning XC bikes out there, with multiple world cup and world championship wins as well as an Olympic gold medal by SCOTT rider Nino Schurter, and several world cup wins and top performances from teammate Kate Courtney.

For its redesign, SCOTT wanted to make sure to keep that winning performance. So how is such a successful bike made better?

According to SCOTT, “a full-suspension bike will never have success without good suspension.” You may be thinking, “well, duh,” but there is a lot to factor into making suspension perform the way we want it to while accommodating the other design aspects of the bike. SCOTT kept the single-pivot design of the previous platform - a flex pivot is used to keep the bike lightweight and offer optimal performance for the travel that this bike has.

The most noticeable change to the Spark frame/suspension is the hidden shock. This wasn’t done just for looks. SCOTT states that creating their Integrated Suspension Technology allowed them to “refine suspension characteristics without sacrificing weight.” This shock design decreases inefficient lateral movements and increases power transfer. The shock now sits lower in the frame which lowers the center of gravity, offering more stable and confidence-inspiring handling. Also a nice feature of the integration of the shock is that it’s more protected from mud and grit, so the suspension will perform at its best even if you have to deal with the elements. Marginal gains is the name of the game in bikes at this level, but I think these changes are more than marginal. Riding this bike around, these changes are a noticeable improvement. The Spark feels great; it feels fast.

As a bike mechanic, my favorite part of the Integrated Suspension Technology is that SCOTT made a point that this shock would be easy to set up, access, work on, and remove. Many times, integration of parts in a frame means headaches for the people that work on the bikes. This will not be the case with SCOTT’s Integrated Suspension Technology. The shock is easy to get to through a hatch at the bottom bracket - so for the rider that means changing air pressure, compression, and rebound is a breeze. Going that extra measure to make the bike suspension easy for a rider to set up/adjust and a mechanic to service means that Scott was very thoughtful in this design on all levels.

The Spark continues to use SCOTT’s TwinLoc suspension system - connecting the shock, fork, and frame through a handlebar remote. Three ride modes are available to the rider with this system; effectively changing the bike’s geometry, suspension, and spring curve at the same time. Those modes are locked out, traction control, and full-open. The TwinLoc system is efficient and effective.

SCOTT made this Spark their lightest weight mountain bike frame to date, but made sure to not give up on stiffness in the areas necessary. The integration of the cockpit is executed just as will as the shock - no kinks in the brake lines/shift cables, sleek to look at, and the ability to easily make the front end slacker.

The suspension travel on the Spark is now 120 front/120 rear. More travel is more fun. And thanks to the new suspension design, the super lightweight-ness of the frame, and the sleek integration of the cockpit, this bike is FAST. What’s that mean? #fastisfun :)

Santa Cruz Heckler

To heckle is to disrupt. I love heckling - specifically at bike races. Give some silly, encouraging jabs to racers and you see grimaces turn to smiles.

That’s what this bike does - it disrupts your daily ride and will change your grimace to one huge-a$$ a smile.

Go long and feel good about it! The new Santa Cruz Heckler comes with an interchangeable 720wh battery (up from 504wh in the previous model).

The VPP suspension has been precisely tuned for the e-bike. This bike is plush but built with slightly less anti-squat so traction will be gripping-and-ripping up those climbs you’ll be testing yourself on. The 160/150 travel will carry riders confidently through ups and downs and all sorts of technical terrain.

The new Heckler features mixed wheel size or dual 29” wheel size options. So whether you’re a “business in the front, party in the back” type rider, or all-in with the big wheels, this bike will serve up the ride experience you’ve been craving.

Specialized Rockhopper Comp 29

The hardtail mountain bike that will get you into the sport and keep you riding!

The Rockhopper Comp is one of our favorites in the lineup of this bike. At $1000, you’re getting a good bang for your buck.

The frame is light and zippy with a comfortable geometry. The Microshift 1x9 drivetrain is one of our favorites out there - clean, durable, and reliable. Hydraulic disc brakes have riders feeling secure and confident in their riding ability. A fork with hydraulic damping and a lock-out allow for a better ride experience. Add in 29” wheels that roll over technical terrain with ease, and you’ve got a bike that is more than just “entry level”.

2022 Santa Cruz Bronson 4

20210712_172644-01.jpeg

The saying goes, “If in doubt, take a Bronson out.”

We couldn’t agree more, especially with the types of mountain biking we have around Harrisonburg, VA.

The Bronson 4 comes with a mixed wheelset - 29” up front, 27.5” in the back. A mullet build, if you will. It gets the business done while still letting you party! We’ve been very impressed by it’s maneuverability, pedaling efficiency, and confidence-inspiring handling.

This particular model is the Carbon C R, and is $5,049.

20210712_172656-01.jpeg

The suspension travel is 160 / 150, with a RockShox Lyric Select Fork and FOX Float X Performance Shock. This setup allows for big hits to not hit so hard and control to be maintained through bumpier terrain. And when it comes time to climb, the VPP™ (Virtual Pivot Point) suspension design makes heading uphill a breeze.

20210712_172738-01.jpeg
20210712_172822-01.jpeg

The brakes and drivetrain are SRAM - G2 R brakes, NX Eagle shifter/10-50 cassette, derailleur, chain, and a Descendent crankset with a 32 tooth chainring. The wheels are SRAM MTH hubs built to RaceFace AR Offset rims with an internal width of 30mm. 2.6” Maxxis Minion tires finish off the wheelset to offer that max grip and durability through rough rocks and dirt. This is a super reliable component setup and offers ease in maintenance of the bike.

We are so stoked this bike was the first Santa Cruz to come to Rocktown, and we are very excited for more to arrive!

2021 S-works Tarmac SL7: Custom Build

20210204_155349-01.jpeg

There’s no doubt about it; the new Tarmac SL7 is one heck of a bike. So fast, so aero, and so capable it only takes a few pedal strokes to know you’re on something special.

This particular emerald green machine is quite special to us - we ordered the S-Works SL7 Frame for a customer and built it up with some stellar parts!

Specialized’s phrase for the Tarmac SL7 is “One bike to rule them all”. This rings true. I had the honor of giving this bike its first ride per our customer’s wishes. It was so surreal and amazing (and terrifying - riding a very fancy bike that is not my own), I felt like I was in a dream.

If you’ve asked me (Kelly) about any of the new bikes from Specialized I’ve ridden over the years, I will usually give quite a positive response. And that positivity is truthful - I’m a big fan of Specialized and the work they do. But this bike… this bike beats them all.

The Tarmac SL7 is very responsive and FAST. All it took for me to greatly increase my speed on a downhill was to slightly lower my torso (no super tuck required, haha). And climbing, to “just spin on up” a hill, felt as easy as snapping my fingers. Even riding at a normal steady pace (I did not hit any climbs or try to test the limits of this bike), it was apparent that I was doing far less work on this bike compared to my own 2018 Tarmac SL5.

From building Tarmac SL6s, Venges, and Roubaixs, I’ve gotten to know how each of those models feel and what I like and dislike about them. The Tarmac SL6 felt responsive and was light, but didn’t have the tire clearance we like to have (we like that 32c tire clearance). The Roubaix is aero (slightly more aero than the Tarmac SL6), cleared 33c tires, and is SO smooth and quite a responsive ride. However, it isn’t as light as the Tarmac. The 2019 Venge - extremely aero, pretty light, cleared 32c tires, and very stiff (and it came in some AMAZING paint jobs). It was not around for long, but the creation of this model of Venge helped Specialized in generating the best frame tube shapes for any style of bike they are hoping to make.

I think all three of these bikes helped in the existence of the Tarmac SL7. It’s like the SL6 and the Venge had a baby, and now also matches the tire clearance of the Roubaix.

There’s no more compromises in looking for a bike that is stiff, aero, and light (for race legal weight). This bike, as you see it pictured, weighed in at 16.3lbs.

20210206_071902-01.jpeg

As for its ride feel, I guess you could say it’s like a race horse chomping at the bit to go faster. Stomp on the pedals on any terrain and it’s like the bike says, “keep it coming.” It’s just an absolute joy to ride.

I didn’t go screaming down any descents, but the longest one for my ride had some nice turns in it and the bike responded with the lightest touch. That’s not to say that it feels twitchy - it’s not twitchy at all. The Tarmac SL7 is confidently responsive - you know where it’s going, and you can change the course of direction quickly and easily if necessary.

I very much enjoyed and appreciated my time on this bike. Specialized really nailed it with this one.

2020 Roubaix Expert Di2

Color: Cast Berry Edge Fade/ Dove Gray/ Black

The all-new Roubaix Expert now delivers compliance without compromise by introducing a radical new Future Shock 2.0 that gives you more control and damping options, a new Pavé seatpost that creates our most balanced Roubaix to date, aerodynamics that equal the Tarmac, and a Rider-First Engineered™ frame that’s shed some serious weight. Is it still comfortable? Sure, but don’t call it a comfort bike, because performance was behind every engineering decision we made. This is the new Roubaix.

For the build, this bike is spec’d with the Expert with Shimano Ultegra Di2 for its powerful hydraulic disc brakes and super crisp 11-speed shifting. Of course, you’ll be rolling on stupid-fast carbon fiber wheels courtesy of a Roval C 38 Disc wheelset.

  • The new frame delivers compliance without compromise via the perfect balance of aerodynamics, light overall weight, compliance, and Rider-First Engineering™. With tube shapes that were born in Specialized’ FreeFoil Shape Library and validated in the Win Tunnel, the new Roubaix’s as aero as the Tarmac SL6. Meanwhile, to ensure the weight and ride quality, Specialized turned to a Rider-First Engineered™ design to deliver optimal stiffness and compliance across all sizes, from 44 to 64cm. Of course, the frame has shed some serious weight in the process. And to prep you for your own Hell of the North, they have made room for 33mm tires.

  • To go along with the new frame, Specialized also developed a totally-new S-Works Pavé seatpost. Not only is it the first compliant seatpost that’s ALSO aerodynamic, it does so without any additional weight or finicky contraptions. Starting with the same D-shape design found on the Tarmac, Specialized took its compliance a step further by building additional flex into the upper and developing a new drop-clamp design in the frame. This provides plenty of compliance, while staying perfectly balanced with the front-end, so you get a smooth, balanced ride no matter how rough the road.

  • The Future Shock 2.0 is the result of Specialized pro riders’ demands for the cobbles of Roubaix. It’s smoother, faster, and gives you more control via a knob atop the stem. This knob adjusts compression from fully-open to stiff, while hydraulically-damped internals control rebound. Add it up, and this latest version will reduce fatigue and increase your speed, no matter the terrain. The new Smooth Boot, top cap, and Future Stem also enhance the aesthetic, so you get a clean transition from head tube to stem.

PIVOT Mach 4 SL with Live Valve

“GRAVITY DEFYING CROSS COUNTRY ROCKET SHIP”

This particular build is the Pivot Mach 4 SL Team XTR w/120mm Fork and FOX Live Valve.

A little about the Live Valve from PIVOT - “Live Valve’s electronically activated suspension system senses impacts and knows when you’re climbing or descending. 2020 Specialized Enduro Elite

The all-New Enduro

The new Enduro climbs quickly, yet mobs down the nastiest descents at what should be terrifying speeds…with utter calm. It’s a radically new beast, sporting a Demo-inspired chassis, more travel, and geometry that keeps you in control when you bite off more than you can chew.

Balanced Chassis Stiffness
Specialized didn’t set out to make the stiffest bike possible—that bike would be a tooth-rattling nightmare. The Enduro’s balanced stiffness helps the front-end steer precisely and keeps the rear-end tracking like it’s on rails through the roughest terrain.

Less Hang-up, More Speed
Specialized gave the Enduro a more rearward axle path, reducing the rear wheel’s tendency to “hang-up” on big impacts. Out on the trail, that equals more control, more momentum, and greater speed.

More Control
The new Enduro boasts smooth and controlled suspension, start to finish. The progressive leverage curve makes the Enduro supple over small rocks and roots and prevents it from bottoming-out on big hits.

Big Wheels, Big Momentum
Bigger wheels maintain momentum better than smaller wheels—particularly over technical terrain. That’s why the new Enduro rolls exclusively on 29-inch wheels. It marries 170 millimeters of suspension travel with big wheels in a package that’s crazy fast.

Kelly's 2020 Diverge Comp

Gravel riding has arrived and is here to stay. After racing a full 2019 season on dirt roads, I decided it was time to commit to a bike that was better suited for longer days in the saddle on gnarly ‘groads’ (yep i said it, GROADS).
So, the 2020 Diverge Comp is my bike of choice for this coming year, and I’m so excited!

See?! Much excitement!

Gravel, rocks, dirt, sand, forest… these roads have always been around, but have recently become quite popular. They’re fun, dynamic, add more adventures to the bike life, and are less trafficked by automobiles. Safer, quieter, and exciting terrain? That sounds pretty nice. But the standard road bikes can feel a bit harsh on bumpy roads. It used to be we would just have a “run what you ‘brung” attitude, but the industry has caught on that gravel riding is a thing, and out of that has come the “Gravel Bike”.

The Diverge is Specialized answer to riding the road less traveled. It has larger tire clearance, a Future Shock, and a frame geometry that really brings the “Smoother is Faster” statement to life. Compared to the Crux I was on, this bike has shorter chainstays, a lower bottom bracket, less fork rake, higher stack, and less reach. It’s a geometry that makes the bike feel grounded and snappy at the same time - capable of instilling confidence and control in a wide range of riding conditions. The frame is also Rider-First Engineered™ (just like the Venge, Tarmac, and Roubaix), which essentially gives the same ride experience on every single size of this bike; no chattery feelings on the smaller frames and no flexy feelings on the larger ones. It’s a whole different machine from the bike I was riding, and I can’t wait to take it on some new adventures.

Having the option of being able to ride up to a 42c tire makes this bike ready for a variety of rides, races, and events. At LandRun100 and the DirtyKanza, the tire of choice is usually a 38c, whereas at an event like GRUSK a 32c tire is perfect for their mixture of gravel and pavement. And if things get real gnarly, like for the Rockstar VA Gravel Route, it’s great to know that I could put 42c tires on there and be OK.

In addition to the tire clearance, I’m excited to be riding a bike with a Future Shock. The Future Shock adds a bit of suspension, damps vibrations, and makes it feel like you’re riding in a cloud with unicorns flying next to you. Ok, I may have exaggerated that statement, BUT it is such an incredibly smooth ride, all you’re going to do is smile when you’re on this bike.

I’m hoping to go on some new trips and adventures in 2020 and this is the bike that will be coming along. It’s going to be great!

2020 Roubaix Comp Di2

The All-New Roubaix Comp Di2

The all-new Roubaix Comp now delivers compliance without compromise by introducing a radical new Future Shock 1.5 that gives you more control on rough roads, a new Pavé seatpost that creates our most balanced Roubaix to date, aerodynamics that equal the Tarmac, and a Rider-First Engineered™ frame that’s shed some serious weight. Is it still comfortable? Sure, but don’t call it a comfort bike, because performance was behind every engineering decision we made. This is the new Roubaix.

“Smoother is Faster” - Not only does the new Roubaix look sleek and quick, it is faster than it’s ever been.

The frame is now more aero than the Tarmac SL6

The Future Shock got an update and was smoothed out for an improved and more integrated looking cockpit.

The new S-Works Pave’ seatpost

The first ever aero and compliant seatpost.

I just love the sleekness of this wire routing with the new Di2, no weird things have to occur here to keep the wire from getting hit by debris or the rear tire

Integrated and super sleek junction port, with options for mechanical, di2, or wireless.

Almost every Spceialized saddle is SWAT compatible. This Storm-proof saddle bag fits the perfect amount of flat repair/emergency supplies, is waterproof, and tucks up under the saddle quite nicely. No straps around the rails or seatpost or anything!

Ultegra Hydraulic groupset with the new RX derailleur

Yay, Roubaix!

A few notes on this specific build:

  • The tires seen in these pictures are not stock, I installed what is probably my all time favorite road/gravel tire - 32c Roubaix Pro 2bliss Ready, with the Transparent sidewall.

    • The 2bliss Ready setup allows for lower tire pressure to be run, and it feels SO good, especially on chip-seal and gravel roads

    • The transparent sidewall tires made by Specialized are actually a bit lighter than the non-transparent version, and are just as durable

    • 32c is probably the perfect size for most gravel roads and countryside pavement. Smooth, fast, and fun.
